First sold on July 7, 1928, sliced bread has since made history. Sold initially by baker Frank Bench and inventor Otto Rohwedder at Bench's Chillicothe Baking Company, it was a feat in the making.
Rohwedder and Bench took a chance that paid off--bread sales rose 2000 percent in the first 2 weeks. Our building is the original building where the Chillicothe Baking Company was located.
Although the very first machine used on that day in 1928 has since fallen apart, the second is on display at the Grand River Muesum in Chillicothe, and the Sliced Bread Innovation Center also houses one of the originals.
